CHICAGO: The Chicago Sky spent much of Tuesday night trying to recover from a deficit that reached 14 points.
In the fourth quarter, Kamilla Cardoso stopped waiting.
The second-year center scored 14 points during the final period, helping Chicago defeat the Los Angeles Sparks 97–86 at Wintrust Arena.
The Sky produced 30 fourth-quarter points, completing a comeback that reflected the potential of their interior attack when they can sustain offensive pressure.
A game that initially favored Los Angeles
The Sparks entered with scoring threats capable of attacking different parts of Chicago's defense.
Azurá Stevens finished with 21 points, seven rebounds and four steals.
Kelsey Plum added 20 points and five assists.
Dearica Hamby contributed 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Los Angeles established enough offensive rhythm to lead by 14.
For Chicago, that created a familiar problem.
The Sky had struggled to produce enough points during several earlier games, making larger deficits particularly difficult to erase.
Against Los Angeles, however, the offensive response arrived.
Cardoso changes the fourth quarter
Cardoso's final-period production became the central factor.
Fourteen points from a center in one quarter place considerable pressure on opposing defensive assignments.
Los Angeles had to defend her near the basket while also accounting for Chicago's other offensive contributors.
When Cardoso established effective position, the Sky had an opportunity to create high-percentage shots.
When the Sparks increased defensive attention, Chicago could look elsewhere.
That combination helped the Sky reach 30 points during the final period.
The offensive surge transformed a difficult game into an 11-point victory.
Chicago finds the balance it needs
The Sky's long-term offensive success depends partly on developing complementary roles for Cardoso and Reese.
Both are capable rebounders.
Both can generate interior production.
But effective spacing and passing remain essential.
Against Los Angeles, the team received enough collective offense to create room for Cardoso to attack.
Her 14-point final quarter demonstrated what can happen when Chicago establishes a reliable interior scoring option.
The result also provided an important response to the team's earlier difficulties.
A comeback worth studying
The victory was encouraging, but the Sky must examine why they trailed by 14 in the first place.
A team that regularly needs an extraordinary final quarter will struggle against the league's strongest opponents.
Chicago must improve its early offensive execution and limit defensive lapses.
But the final period revealed a legitimate strength.
Cardoso can become a difficult player to contain when she receives effective opportunities.
Against the Sparks, she converted those opportunities into one of the team's most important victories of the season.
