CLEVELAND — Rain stopped the American League Championship Series from advancing Friday. Game 4 between the Guardians and Tampa Bay Rays at Progressive Field was postponed to Saturday, October 17, leaving Cleveland ahead 2–1 in the best-of-seven series.
The revised schedule puts Game 4 at 7 p.m. Central on Saturday and Game 5 at 4 p.m. Central on Sunday. Those are the announced broadcast windows. The change removes Sunday's planned off-day. A sixth game, if needed, would follow Monday in St. Petersburg, with a potential seventh game Tuesday.
Cleveland earned its series advantage with a 3–2 victory Thursday. The official Game 3 record shows the Guardians scored once in the second inning and twice in the fifth. Tampa Bay scored both of its runs in the fourth, briefly moving ahead before Cleveland answered. The Guardians finished with six hits, while the Rays had three; neither team committed an error.
That close result remains the latest completed game. Friday's postponement added no victory to either side and did not give Cleveland a 3–1 lead. The Guardians still need two wins to take the pennant, while Tampa Bay needs three. With both clubs remaining in Cleveland for the next two games, the Guardians have a chance to finish the series at home.
Milwaukee has already secured the National League pennant, leaving the Brewers waiting for the American League winner. The immediate task in Cleveland is more modest: resume a series that weather interrupted, with the standings unchanged and the remaining schedule compressed.
The next two ALCS games are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. Any further weather-related changes would come through Major League Baseball's official schedule.
Patrick Bailey needed one pitch to change the shape of the American League Championship Series opener. Drew Rasmussen had kept Cleveland behind for six innings. Bailey's home run to begin the seventh made the game even, and the Guardians finally turned the traffic they had created all night into a lead they could protect.
