CHICAGO — Illinois high school football enters a new postseason under an expanded Illinois High School Association format. The 2026 playoff field contains 384 teams, up from 256, with 48 schools in each of eight classes. The larger field creates an opening round before the traditional 32-team bracket in each class.
The change makes qualification and seeding separate questions. Conference champions receive automatic berths under the IHSA's eligibility rules. Remaining eligible schools are sorted first by wins, then by the combined victories of their opponents and the combined victories of opponents they defeated. A regular-season record therefore matters alongside the strength of the schedule used to earn it.
The bye structure also requires a precise explanation. Classes 1A through 6A are split into northern and southern halves of 24 schools. The top eight seeds in each half receive an opening-round bye. Classes 7A and 8A use a statewide 1-through-48 bracket, with the top 16 seeds receiving byes. Each class has 16 bye teams, but the smaller classes do not simply use one statewide top-16 list.
Opening-round winners join the bye teams in Round 1. The higher seed hosts in the opening round. In later rounds, hosting history during the current playoff series comes first; the higher seed hosts when both schools have hosted equally often. A ranking in a media poll does not determine an IHSA seed.
For schools such as Lincoln-Way East, Morris and Antioch, the official bracket is the place to establish classification, seed and opponent. Regular-season media classifications remain projections until the field is selected and divided by enrollment. This explainer does not assign those schools an unverified record, seed or matchup.
The IHSA calendar lists the opening round for October 23–24, followed by Round 1 on October 30–31. Quarterfinals are scheduled for November 13–14, semifinals for November 20–21 and state finals for November 27–28. Individual game times require confirmation from the official pairing and participating schools.
The expanded field offers more communities a postseason opportunity. It also makes the bracket more important to understanding a team's path: a berth, an opening-round home game and a bye represent different positions. Readers following the tournament should check each of those details rather than treating qualification as a complete measure of postseason advantage.

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern's 24-21 victory at Michigan State on Saturday will be remembered for Jackson Kleather's 34-yard field goal in the closing seconds. But the kick was the final step in a far more complicated escape. Before Northwestern could win, its defense had to prevent a Michigan State score, its offense had to recover from an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit and its quarterback had to make sure the last meaningful possession belonged to the Wildcats.
