EVANSTON — Northwestern spent much of Thursday’s meeting with Maryland chasing the score. In the fourth quarter, the Wildcats changed both the game and the top of the Big Ten race. Olivia Bent-Cole completed her first career hat trick as No. 2 Northwestern beat No. 1 Maryland 4–2 at Lakeside Field.
Northwestern improved to 15–1 overall and 6–0 in conference play. Maryland entered unbeaten and left 14–1 overall, 5–1 in the Big Ten. The result gave the Wildcats the head-to-head victory in a matchup between teams that began the afternoon without a conference loss.
Maryland struck first through Ella Beach at 11:10. Bent-Cole answered at 14:04, sending the teams toward the second quarter level. A Maryland goal from Hollamon at 28:10 restored the visitors’ lead before halftime. Northwestern still trailed 2–1 entering the final quarter, so its comeback required a sustained late response rather than an immediate answer to that second goal.
Bent-Cole supplied the first two parts of it. Her goals at 45:52 and 51:53 moved Northwestern from a one-goal deficit to a one-goal advantage. The Wildcats added a fourth goal later in the period, completing a three-goal quarter and creating the final margin. The three-goal finish rewarded Northwestern’s ability to turn a close game into a decisive late surge.
The final team statistics describe a competitive game rather than an overwhelming territorial mismatch. Northwestern led 10–9 in shots and 7–3 in shots on goal. Maryland held a 7–4 advantage in penalty corners. Northwestern’s conversion of its late opportunities proved more decisive than the overall volume of chances.
For the Wildcats, the result also changes the setting for the next home date. They host Rutgers at noon Central on Sunday, October 25, for Senior Day at Lakeside Field. Thursday’s comeback puts Northwestern into that game with an unbeaten conference record after handing Maryland its first defeat of the season.

Berube’s Northwestern Era Begins With Illinois Matchups and a New Rotation
Northwestern Wildcats
Carla Berube’s first Northwestern season will introduce itself to Illinois basketball fans through a series of nearby opponents, not just through the eventual Big Ten schedule. The Wildcats have home dates against Northern Illinois, DePaul, Illinois State and Eastern Illinois, plus road meetings with UIC and Loyola Chicago. Those games give the program’s coaching transition a local frame before conference play becomes the dominant story.
