UIC’s women’s basketball season will begin with a demanding road assignment and move quickly into games Chicago fans can follow across the city. The Flames open at Ohio State on November 2, visit Robert Morris on November 5 and return to Credit Union 1 Arena to face Northwestern on November 8. The home opener gives Ashleen Bracey’s team an immediate local matchup after two away games.
The first competitive look comes sooner. UIC’s current schedule lists an October 16 exhibition at DePaul at 7 p.m., followed by an October 24 exhibition at Purdue at 11 a.m. Those games will not count toward the regular-season record. They will offer a chance to evaluate a roster with five returning veterans and nine newcomers before the results begin to shape the season.
Bracey enters her fifth season after a 14–18 campaign that included a 9–11 Missouri Valley Conference record. UIC’s schedule announcement reports three postseason appearances in her first four seasons and 66 victories over that period. The new schedule is an opportunity to build on that work while addressing the demands of another significant roster transition.
The returning group provides a reference point
Julia Coleman is one of the players UIC can look toward as it establishes its new rotation. The junior earned three MVC recognitions last season: third-team all-conference, All-Defensive Team and All-Newcomer Team. In conference games she averaged 16.3 points, and she finished the season with 238 rebounds.
Those achievements give the team a returning contributor with production on both ends of the floor. They do not eliminate the need to integrate the newcomers. A player who has already established a role may still be asked to make different decisions when the surrounding personnel changes, particularly when a team introduces several new guards and forwards at once.
The official roster includes freshman guard Danielle Brooks from Chicago’s Kenwood Academy and redshirt senior Miyah Brown, a Rockford native who previously played at Bellarmine. Their backgrounds add Illinois connections to a roster that also includes players from outside the state. Those connections deserve accurate coverage without turning hometowns into unsupported claims about how the rotation will be arranged.
The opening exhibitions have a clear purpose
The DePaul date puts UIC into a nearby opponent’s gym before its regular-season opener at Ohio State. The Purdue exhibition adds another road setting. Together they give Bracey’s staff two opportunities to observe how players respond when practice decisions have to be applied against a different team.
Exhibition basketball can reveal whether a group communicates well, protects the ball and creates usable shots. It can also produce results that exaggerate what is working because coaches are experimenting with substitutions. The useful evaluation will therefore go beyond whether UIC wins either rehearsal.
For a roster with nine newcomers, the ability to maintain organization across lineup changes is particularly relevant. A productive starting group is only part of the assignment. The Flames also need combinations that remain connected when fresh players enter and the opponent changes its approach. Those habits will matter immediately in the road games that open November.
A home opener with a city connection
Northwestern’s November 8 visit is part of UIC’s Homecoming weekend. The Flames’ schedule announcement states that the team will seek its first victory over the Wildcats since 2007. That history gives the matchup a specific competitive reference point without settling how either new roster will perform.
Northwestern is beginning its first season under Carla Berube. UIC is continuing Bracey’s established tenure with a substantial group of additions. The contrast gives the game a useful story beyond the distance between the schools: two staffs will be trying to make different versions of a roster transition work before conference play begins.
Chicago State visits UIC on November 11. The Flames then travel to Iowa State on November 15 before home dates against Lindenwood and Ball State. A December 13 visit to Loyola and December 15 trip to Northern Illinois extend the Illinois connections later in the nonconference schedule.
Preparation must lead into the Valley
UIC begins its MVC home schedule against Indiana State on December 20. The broader league schedule includes visits from Illinois State, Southern Illinois and Bradley, giving Illinois readers several conference matchups that deserve attention throughout the winter. Dates and tipoff information should be checked against the current official schedule as the season approaches.
The Flames will also join the conference’s new combined tournament setting in St. Louis. The MVC has announced that its men’s and women’s championships will share Enterprise Center during the same week. That provides an eventual destination, but UIC first needs to establish the quality of its ordinary possessions and rotations over the months before March.
The immediate story is available now: a Friday exhibition in Chicago, another road rehearsal at Purdue and a regular-season start that asks the Flames to handle travel before opening at home against Northwestern. UIC has returning accomplishments worth covering and new personnel worth learning. Its women’s program belongs in the daily Illinois basketball conversation from the beginning of that process.
