IHSA Football Expands to 384-Team Playoff Field, Changing the Meaning of Qualification

CHICAGO — Illinois high school football enters a new postseason under an expanded Illinois High School Association format. The 2026 playoff field contains 384 teams, up from 256, with 48 schools in each of eight classes. The larger field creates an opening round before the traditional 32-team bracket in each class.
