Cleveland’s postseason ended Monday in St. Petersburg, where Tampa Bay turned its final American League Championship Series opportunity at home into a 7–3 victory and a place in the World Series.
Junior Caminero and Yandy Díaz each hit a two-run home run as the Rays finished the series in six games. Tampa Bay will face Milwaukee, bringing the World Series to the Brewers after Cleveland fell one round short of joining them.
Richie Palacios opened the scoring with a two-run double in the second inning. That early lead gave Tampa Bay a position from which to manage the game rather than chase it. Freddy Peralta allowed one run over 5⅓ innings, and the Rays’ offense continued to build enough separation to survive Cleveland’s late threat.
The Guardians made the eighth inning consequential. With Tampa Bay leading 5–1, a bases-loaded walk and a hit batter brought Cleveland within 5–3. Kevin Kelly then struck out Brayan Rocchio to end the inning, preventing the rally from becoming a tie or a lead change.
Díaz supplied an immediate response in the bottom of the eighth, extending the margin back to four runs. Bryan Baker retired the Guardians in order in the ninth to finish the clincher. The last two innings captured the difference between applying pressure and completing a comeback: Cleveland created an opening, but Tampa Bay closed it and added insurance.
For the Midwest, the result clarifies the next chapter of October. Milwaukee now has an opponent, while Cleveland’s attention shifts away from a potential Game 7. The Rays earned their third pennant; the Brewers are the remaining regional club with a chance to finish the season as champions.
Game 1 is scheduled for Friday, October 23, in Milwaukee. Tampa Bay’s route into that matchup came through an effective Peralta start, early run production and two home runs that prevented Cleveland from reducing the night to a single late swing. The Guardians forced the Rays to answer in the eighth. Tampa Bay’s answer was enough to end the series.
CLEVELAND — In a postseason series in which every at-bat carries increased weight, Cleveland's biggest swing Thursday came from near the bottom of the order. Rookie outfielder Petey Halpin hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the fifth inning, and the Guardians defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 3–2 in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series.
