EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern needed a late goal to turn senior day into a championship afternoon. Ilse Tromp scored in the fourth quarter Sunday as the Wildcats beat Rutgers 2–1 at Lakeside Field and clinched a share of the Big Ten regular-season field hockey title.
The victory moved Northwestern to 16–1 overall and 7–0 in conference play. The university also confirmed the Wildcats had secured the No. 1 seed for the Big Ten Tournament, scheduled for November 4–8 in Columbus, Ohio.
A share of the regular-season title is an accomplished result; sole possession remains the next objective. Northwestern visits Penn State on Friday, October 30, with the university listing a 2 p.m. Chicago-time start. A win would give the Wildcats the outright regular-season championship.
Rutgers made Northwestern work for Sunday’s result. Talia Schenck scored in the first quarter to put the Scarlet Knights ahead, converting their first shot of the game. Northwestern then had to recover against a team that entered on a five-game winning streak.
Kiera Sack supplied the equalizer in the second quarter. She collected a loose ball in the circle and finished to make it 1–1. The score remained level at halftime and through the entire third quarter, keeping the outcome unresolved well into the final period.
Tromp’s winning goal came from a late penalty corner. Her dragflick gave Northwestern the lead with less than three minutes remaining, according to Rutgers’ final report. It was the decisive use of an opportunity in a game that offered relatively few shots to either side.
Northwestern finished with seven shots to Rutgers’ four and led 4–2 in penalty corners. The Wildcats put five shots on goal, while Rutgers had two. Scarlet Knights goalkeeper Emily Nicholls made three saves, but the final corner produced the goal that ended Rutgers’ winning run.
Rutgers fell to 10–7 overall and 4–3 in the Big Ten. Its early lead and long stretch at 1–1 showed how close the game remained despite Northwestern’s stronger conference record. The Wildcats did not create a large enough offensive margin to make the finish comfortable; they had to execute the late scoring chance.
Before the match, Northwestern recognized 11 seniors. The result added a conference achievement to that occasion without changing the work still ahead. The Wildcats have won the past four Big Ten regular-season titles, dating to 2023, and the program now has 10 regular-season conference championships, according to the university’s final report.
The next match carries a different distinction from Sunday’s. Northwestern already owns a share of the trophy and the tournament’s top seed. At Penn State, it will try to remove the word “share” from the regular-season title while completing an unbeaten Big Ten schedule.
